Cloud trade copier vs VPS: what the extra $30/mo actually buys

July 31, 2026 · Kenten Kronemann (Kenny Trades)

Ask why trade-copier vendors all sell VPS hosting and you learn something about copier architecture: a copier that runs on your machine inherits your machine's problems. The VPS isn't an upgrade — it's a patch for a dependency the architecture created.

What a VPS actually fixes

Three real things: uptime (no sleep, no Windows Update at 9:29 ET), proximity (a Chicago VPS sits milliseconds from CME instead of your home ISP's 20–60ms), and consistency (no one else's Netflix on the same Wi-Fi). For a desktop or add-on copier, those fixes are worth the $30–170/mo the hosting costs — which is why vendors sell it.

What it doesn't fix

The copier still runs one machine, and that machine is still yours to babysit: platform updates, license binding, the add-on crashing at the open, the session that logged itself out overnight. A VPS moves your single point of failure to a nicer data center — it doesn't remove it. And the platform in the middle (NT8, a desktop app) still adds its own hop between fill and copy.

The cloud-copier trade

A cloud copier runs the whole pipeline — fill detection, sizing, submission — server-side next to the exchanges, holding each broker's API connection directly. There is no machine for you to rent or babysit, so the VPS bill disappears along with the failure mode it patched. The honest cost of that trade: you're trusting the vendor's infrastructure, so the vendor owes you evidence it's actually fast — per-order numbers, not "lightning-fast" adjectives.

How to compare for real

Every copy has four legs: detect the leader's fill, decide follower sizes, submit the orders, and the broker's own wire. The first three belong to the copier; the last belongs to the broker and hits every copier equally. So when you compare, compare the copier's share on real production orders. Ours prints on every order in your Copy Log and aggregates live at /latency — ~42ms median engine share, outliers disclosed. Any vendor can claim a number; ask them for the page where they publish it.

If you're currently paying copier + VPS, the math is simple: the first month here is free, so run the same session on both stacks and read your own receipts.
